Shipwreck at Žirje, Juro bay
The underwater archaeological site near the Juro bay on the island of Žirje represents the well-preserved shipwreck from the 3rd century AD. It was discovered in December 2015. A group of visible finds extends at a depth of 20 to 38.5 m in length of about 46 m and a maximum width of about 10 m. Most of the finds are made of fully or partially preserved am phorae produced on the island of Krf in Greece and the Greek colony of Faros on the island of Hvar during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Among the fragments and the complete specimens there are also pottery dishes of various shapes that made the equipment of the ship’s kitchen. The extent of the site at depths of 20 to 38.5 m, the scattering of the finds on the plateau of the rocks, and the indented morphology of the sea bottom is not suitable for the protection of archeological findings in situ.
