Bigovica is a small beautiful bay near Bar. In the period that spans over 22 centuries, the bay was used as a merchant shipping port and, at some point, most likely for smuggling as well.

For many years, unscrupulous divers were devastating the site by collecting “souvenirs.” According to local witnesses, dozens of amphorae were removed from this site over the years.Still, many fragments have remained, scattered around the seabed.

Bigovica recently became a source of interest for underwater archaeologists. In 2010, the University of Southampton and the Cultural Center Bar launched a joint-venture project, focused primarily on the underwater archaeological mapping and evaluation of the bay.

The project continued in 2012 with additional mapping and dredging excavation.

During the three weeks of research, hundreds of artifacts were recovered. Fragments of amphorae, majolica and glass that were found were dated to the period from 3rd century BC to 17th century AD.
